Project Report

August 2016

Introduction

C & G Agroventures Private Limited (CAPL) is a Private Limited Company incorporated on 1st June 2016 by Mr Avilash Mahananda with a motto to provide healthy food to the people of Odisha. As a Start Up Venture, we at CAPL in the initial phase (first phase) would like to commence our venture in a modest way to provide Clean & Green (C&G) vegetables at an affordable price to the people of Bhubaneswar, whatever economic background they are. While catering to individual house hold, we would also like to cater to Canteens and Hostel Mess of various educational institutions, restaurants and hotels of Bhubaneswar. While catering to above section of consumers in Bhubaneswar, we will take a feedback and would like to cater other food items to our existing consumers and we are planning to cater to other towns of Odisha and subsequently to Pan India.

Pesticides are toxic by design. They are created expressly to kill living organisms: insects, plants and fungi that are considered “pests.” Many pesticides pose health dangers to people. These risks have been confirmed by independent research scientists and physicians across the world.

As acknowledged by U.S. and international government agencies, different pesticides have been linked to a variety of health problems, including:

  • Brain and nervous system toxicity
  • Cancer
  • Hormone disruption
  • Skin, eye and lung irritation

As it is often said “We are what we eat” and believe it or not, in today’s scenario, we are inadvertently consuming fruits and vegetables, which could have contaminated with various chemicals, artificial waxes and plenty of unknown pathogens. It is hard to digest but true to know that the fruits and vegetables we consume today have abundance of pesticides, herbicides, weedicides, fungicides, artificial oil, artificial oil & wax and a lot many harmful chemical that are not acceptable to human body. According to recent news reports, the fruits and vegetables in India are laced with surface toxic contaminants like insecticides, pesticide residue, bacteria, dirt, wax, grime, fungicides, artificial colours, ripening chemicals like calcium carbide etc. These chemicals cannot be washed ay with just plain water. The concentrations of these chemicals are significantly high as compared to fruits & vegetables from other countries across the globe. These chemicals might not have an immediate effect on human health, however long term consumption of such vegetables & fruits could be a reason for cancer, reproductive damage, stunted physical and mental growth in children etc. Keeping all this aside, heavy manhandling of the fruits and vegetables during the transport system makes them more prone to germicidal and bacterial contamination before reaching the final destination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s tests have found widespread pesticide contamination on popular fruits and vegetables. At least one pesticide was found on nearly three-quarters of the samples analyzed by the US Department of Agriculture in 2014, the most recent year tested.

With food prices skyward bound and no reprieve from pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits and vegetables will soon become a luxury item for those who can afford chemical free and organic products. The source for pesticide residues in our food could be through the application of pesticides on crops, with residues remaining in the fruits and vegetables or through the application of pesticides in homes to disinfect. Pesticide residues, once in our system can be the cause for several acute and chronic diseases. So removing the pesticides, as much as we can, is the first step forward.

Business Process of CAPL

Fruit & Vegetable washing has become an important part of our day to day activity and recognizing the need to keep the Fruits & Vegetables pesticide-free, chemical-free, colour-free and pathogen free has pushed us to introduce the concept of “Ozonation and Ultrasonic Based Fruit & Vegetable Cleaning Process”. We are going to sale fruits and vegetables which go through “Ozone bubbling and Sonication” that cleans and sanitizes food produce and also increases their shelf life considerably.

We have focused into a field where everything has been unorganized that inspired us to bring in a change. We wanted to make it organised with a scientific and professional approach and hence started working on it since last one year. We also met and discussed with our prospective consumers during the course of our one year’s research. So we started C & G Agroventures Private Limited as our first venture in 2016. We at CAPL will try to solve the problems of both producers and consumers. We aim at taking care of the farmers by eliminating /reducing the inadequacies they usually face while off take of their produce with a structured approach. CAPL will not only into shape and organise the farmers sales and marketing aspect but will take into its ambit the customers demand and their health by providing our customers chemical (toxic) free vegetables and hygienically packed food products targeting a healthy lifestyle for each and every one of them. CAPL has also plan for online sales and planning to be a ship Fruit & Vegetable to its customers on an ongoing basis.

Our motive is to provide healthy Fruit & Vegetable and to create a disease free society in and around us. We envision helping each and every farmer to evolve as an entrepreneur and enable them to handle all operations from production to sales in an efficient way and eventually empower them and instil the respect by which they were derided all these years in spite of \being the backbone of our country's economy.

Study of findings in Bhubaneswar and as practiced in major developed and developing countries around the Globe has given us idea to set up outlets near consumers place. We have setup procurement channels and 4 numbers of FFV (write full form) retail stores in Bhubaneswar and planning for 15 more retail stores in Bhubaneswar and a chain throughout the major cities of Odisha. At present the store will be inside the housing complex/ apartments, which will cater their daily needs and where we get permanent customers. Next phase we will be opening stores in Market Ares. We also have our home delivery system through which one can order online through our website payment or cash on delivery and payment gateway.

The benefits of Online Shopping are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of reasons. There are certainly outside factors such as difficulty getting to traditional stores and the hassles often associated with shopping in malls and other traditional stores may contribute to the increased interest in online shopping. However, there are also many benefits which make online shopping an excellent option for many busy shoppers. Some of these benefits include convenience, comparison shopping capabilities and express shipping options. Online shopping has benefits of return as well as free time availability. One of the most enjoyable conveniences of online shopping is the ability to shop for products at a time which is convenient for the consumers. This can be a major inconvenience especially for shoppers who work long hours or shoppers who work odd hours. Online shopping eliminates this concern because shoppers can simply access online stores from their computer.  We have our own delivery system which will deliver the product within the shortest possible time like 90 to 120 minutes. We are also into institutional sales where we take orders through online or through calls and we ensure on time delivery and quality product.

Production & Operation

We have studied the availability of vegetables and fruits at different places of Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Chhatishgarh & Jharkhand and discussed with the large growers of vegetables and fruits. This will help us in procuring vegetables and fruits directly from farmers, which will be fresh and the farmers will also get the right price. Besides we are in the process of creating hub for procuring vegetables and fruits at large vegetables and fruits market of above states. So far we have already created one and in the process of setting of a mini cold store for store fresh vegetables. During our course of business, we propose to create 5 more mini cold stores. We propose to transport the vegetables and fruits in small trucks initially and later in refrigerated vans to our processing plant at Bhubaneswar.

CAPL has procured machines that will support /help the following:

Sl No

Process

Effect

1

Artificial Ripening

Keep away the ripening of Fruits & Vegetables and will keep the freshness of vegetables and fruits

2

Pesticide

Removal of pesticides, chemical, artificial food additives and color of the  vegetables and fruits

3

Artificial waxes

De-waxing and cleaning with non-contaminated water

The Process of Ultrasonic- sonic waves cleaning microscopic cavitation energy bubbles at the rate of 30-50 kHz and penetrates in to the deepest cervixes of food produce to remove organic debris. Scrubbing action of ultrasonic waves clings onto the dirt, pesticides and chemical thereby loosening them in conjunction with the ozone wash. It will improve the shelf life of the food produce. The entire process aids faster break down of pathogenic load on food produce

  • The process of Ozone – O3 (Activated oxygen): Advantages of using ozone for fruits & vegetable cleaning:

The strong antimicrobial character of ozone is related to its oxidation-reduction potential (2.07 V). Ozone destroys microorganisms instantly and effectively, without leaving harmful residues in treated food or processing water. Ozone is safer and environmentally friendlier than most other antimicrobials. It extends shelf life of fruits and vegetables. The Ozonation Process utilizes a short contact time.

After ozonation, there is no re-growth of microorganisms. Ozone is generated onsite and thus there are fewer safety problems associated with shipping and handling.

Improved Taste and Appearance: Ozone has been shown to improve taste and appearance of fresh cut salad while controlling food borne pathogens.

  • Power of ozone + Ultrasonic Foodsonic – Pro:

  • Removes 99% of pesticides from food produce
  • Uses dual technology: Ozone + Sonic Waves
  • Sonication removes pathogenic debree, Ozone oxidizes chemical residues from Fruits & Vegetables. This removal of pesticides is according to Sigma Test & Research Centre.

We will be sending Fruits & Vegetables on an ongoing basis initially to KIIT-TBI for a Test Certificate so as to ensure the quality. Our equipments are purchased as per the specification so that the commitments will be met as committed to our customers.

Market Survey for Chemical free Fruits & Vegetables

There is always desire to eat fresh and healthy Fruits & Vegetables,  a new driving force and add to it is a whole new farm-to-doorstep vegetable and fruit delivery service. With increasing awareness of the health hazards of consuming vegetables cultivated in a polluted environment, residents who have no option to grow veggies at home have started turning to outlets that sell ‘pesticide-free’ fruits & vegetables and preferably grown using organic manure. There are hardly any shops have sprung up in India that claim to sell fruits & vegetables and Odisha there are none.

Study approach and design the approach used in carrying out the ‘Vegetables household consumer study’ was quantitative in nature. This involved face to face interviews at household level using pen and paper with randomly selected consumers. We targeted a total of 1310 households distributed in urban areas in Bhubaneswar spanning an over a total of four large housing society. Each household represented one consumer interview since the questionnaire had some household questions. Data used in this study were largely from primary sources. On average the sampled households spent Rs 150 on vegetables per shopping trip. It is only they spend on vegetable but also fuel cost and time investment but end of the day buying cocktail of pesticides  in every  shopping trip. Analyses of the average expenditure per shopping show that as average household monthly expenditure on vegetables will be Rs 4500 in addition fuel and time. Many household buy fruits on occasions only but they opine that, in case fruits including seasonal fruits of quality if delivered at their doorstep will be preferred. However, the average purchase per house hold on account of fruits including seasonal fruits could be Rs 1000 to 1500 per month.

In house store, home delivery system and the pesticide free vegetable has a huge demand for the customer as per the market survey. Now days most of the people are health conscious and work under a busy schedule. There are more than 75% family who work under busy schedule has no time to shop from the market and at the same time they won’t compromise with quality. This category of customer is really looking forward for our service. There are 20% of family who want to see the product and buy for them we have the facility as in house store they can come visit the store see the product and buy. This segment of customer is also happy to buy from us from our pesticide free vegetables and fruits stores without spending extra on fuel. The rest 5% of the customer who wants to experiment like online buying from different shop, they are the satisfied of the online ordering and home delivery system. Our business model caters to all the segment of family. Our pricing will be so competitive everyone can afford these pesticide free vegetables & fruits.

Present Status of the Venture (CAPL)

  • A 3000 sqft workshop has been taken on lease in Mancheswar Industrial Estate, Bhubaneswar, which will be our vegetable processing and packing Hub and with storage facility.
  • Around 300 sqft office in business incubation centre is given by the KIIT – TBI, Bhubaneswar for our office, which will handle online system and R &D our mobile applications.
  • A 1000 sq ft of fully furnished office with sitting capacity of 20 employees including with sitting facility for the board members at Jhardpada, Bhubaneswar to execute the payment and other day to day commercial activities.
  • A facility for storage of Fruits & Vegetables at Barbati (by the side of NH -5) has been taken on a long term lease.
  • Outlets for storing Fruits & Vegetables has been created with the campus of  three Housing Societies on a long term basis

Second Phase & Future Outlook

  1. Training to farmers
  2. Supply of quality seeds, so as they ensure good quality produce.
  3. Supply chain mechanism by adoption of just in time inventory model to reduce wastage.
  4. Currently this sector is totally unorganized; we will give it an organized shape.
  5. Innovative vacuum packaging to reduce wastage and enhance shelf life.
  6. Home delivery will be made and this will not block footpaths & pavements unlike other hawkers and mom-n-pop stores.

Segmentation, Targeting & Positioning

Geographical Segmentation

We plan to start in Odisha and expand to other geographies in India as well.

Mass Targeting

Target to reach all kitchens across India across all economic strata. (Institutions & Households included)

Positioning

We want position as the healthiest alternative available in the market today and at a superbly affordable price.

Our Sales Strategies

Next comes selling and marketing the products. We will have 2 different distribution and selling strategies:

  1. Institutional or B2B: For Institutional Sales our primary targets at this stage are Hospitals & Health Care Units, Educational Centres (University Mess / Canteens, Colleges etc), Mid-Sized Restaurants in Bhubaneswar, Big Hotels in Bhubaneswar, Retail / Domestic Needs

  1. Retail Sales: Initial Stage: Residents of Large Housing Societies of Bhubaneswar. We have identified 3 to 4 locations in Bhubaneswar where we can display our packed products in quantities of 250gms, 500 Gms & 1 Kg on make shift stalls & Mobile Units.

At present we are going to do business in Bhubaneswar slowly we will expand to different cities. We are planning to open 4 numbers of in-house stores in 4 apartments with a target to cater 1400 families staying in those apartments. We will be doing home delivery system by taking order through online and order from calls.

At present we are equipped to handle a production line of 1.5 -2.0 MT vegetables per day and we have a market linkage of more than the production line, which is given in our financial analysis report. We are doing the R & D for upgrading the production line but after full utilization of our production unit we will be ready with our bigger machine design for which R & D is under process.

Sourcing of vegetables

We have already established a chain of network in various pockets of Odisha to procure the produce directly from the producer. Our procurement head will directly interact, procure the produce & pay the rightful dues to the farmers. He will also be responsible for establishing our credibility with farming community. Our major sourcing will be done from Jajpur District where we have taken storage place to store procured vegetable instantly. Jajpur is also known as vegetable hub of Odisha. Vegetables of Jajpur are distributed to most part of Odisha.

We have design our plant and storing place in such a manner that we can store more than 10MT of vegetables in a proper temperature. We have also spoken to cold store owners in Bhubaneswar to keep our vegetables.

We will procure all our vegetables on cash basis since we will be dealing with farmers who will not be able to afford credit sales. Besides cash sales will help us in getting fruits & vegetables at a competitive price. As purchaser on cash we will be privileged buyer over our peers and competitors in the eyes of vegetable growing farmers.

Selling Arrangements:

As of now we have talk to few institution and restaurants who have given us work order in basis of 30 days credit facilities. All retail sales will be on cash basis. There has been a provision to stock at our processing site at Mancheswar Industrial Estate and also at different site stores.

The price of fruits & vegetables will vary from time to time. Since most of the fruits & vegetables grown in India as also in Eastern India are seasonal in nature, the price variation of procurement is very high but the case may not be same for off take. Vegetable will be mostly procured from Jajpur, Keonjhar, Phulbani, Dhenkanal and also Ganjam. Generally these vegetables before reaching consumers at Bhubaneswar passes through 5 middlemen, whereas in our case it will be farmer, CAPL and the consumer. Our aim is to bring the farmer and consumer closer by eliminating middlemen in the supply chain.
